We Stand Behind Our Communities

Our communities support us, and we support them. Not just with our products and services, but through charitable giving and volunteering our time and energy.

Whether it’s giving school supplies to elementary school students, gathering donations for a food drive, fielding a team of walkers for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, or leading a Scout troop, we’re actively involved in our communities and encourage our employees to “give back” through fundraising and volunteer opportunities.

For more than a decade, Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) has been the focus of our volunteer efforts. MSIG was the Presenting Sponsor of the SONM State Summer Games for many years, and our employee volunteers are responsible for managing the Pentathlon competition.

Also throughout the past decade, Mountain States has been a “Corporate Cornerstone” company for United Way of Central New Mexico, whereby certain corporations commit their contribution to running the program (all administrative costs) so that all other contributions go directly to help the community.  A company must give at least $5,000 to be considered a Corporate Cornerstone company.  Employee contributions range from about $20,000 - $45,000 per year and employee involvement runs about 40-50%.

Newspapers in Education, sponsored by the Albuquerque Publishing Company, is a program whereby local businesses provide the newspaper to local schools.  Mountain States has provided a classroom set of newspapers to Dolores Gonzales Elementary School since 1997 at a cost of about $200/year.  We also collect school supplies at the beginning of the school year to donate to these students.

Supporting improvements in our industry is important to us, too. That’s why we’ve endowed a chair at New Mexico State University for the study of insurance and financial services. The Mountain States Endowed Chair ensures that a professor will always be on staff to instruct students on insurance and financial courses.  Additionally, since 2013, Mountain States has sponsored a single purpose scholarship at NMSU.  The Scholarship requires a student to participate in the Risk Management course of study.

Since 1976 Mountain States has sponsored several scholarships at the University of New Mexico.  Over the last several years we have sponsored numerous Presidential Scholarships and memorial scholarships at the Anderson School of Business.  Scholarships are in the names of past presidents of Mountain States: Senator Clinton P. Anderson (founder), Sherburne P. Anderson, Jack F. Walton and Jerry P. With.  To date, we have contributed well over $250,000 for these scholarships.

Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day
April 2015; Albuquerque, NM

On April 23, Mountain States hosted 6 children, ages 8-13, for National Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day.  They learned about our company history and functions of the different departments, with a special talk from one of our Actuarial Assistants.  They also had a tour of the building, including a scavenger hunt, before getting some hands-on experience with their family sponsors - answering telephones, shredding and scanning documents, and even working on some insurance policies.  The children reported learning a lot, all the while having fun!
